Universal Orphans in Comic Books
Some time ago I was invited to provide commentary on the documentary, White Scripts-Black Supermen by Dr. Jonathan Gayles. The point I shared regarding the presentation of African American characters was the concept of being universal orphans. To be a universal orphan means that in the grand scheme of things African American characters exist only in the present and absent of their culture and history. In the video below I expand on characters who appear to live and exist without others of their own race and background. Are there some who are contrary? Of course, but if you review the canon of the comic/sci-fi/fantasy, you will find a lot of orphans out there in the universe.
